Velocidad is made possible by a partnership between three organizations with a long history of working to strengthen and encourage the independent media ecosystem in Latin America. After working together on several projects in the region, we realized that the next logical step was to join forces to accelerate the development of this region's digital media ecosystem.
The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) empowers journalists to deliver trustworthy news essential for vibrant societies. By working at the nexus of journalism and technology, ICFJ improves the storytelling skills of reporters worldwide and promotes high-impact journalism that leads to better lives.
ICFJ has worked with more than 100,000 journalists, students and technologists from 180 countries since 1984. We manage up to 75 programs yearly, including the establishment of investigative reporter networks, exchanges among journalists from countries around the world, and training in the use of digital tools.
Those who participated in our programs have produced stories that contributed to their societies, leading to more transparent governments, healthier communities and a cleaner environment. In an age when journalists are harassed worldwide, ICFJ fights to ensure that the media can serve their essential role of informing their audiences
SembraMedia is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the diversity of voices and quality content in Spanish by helping digital media entrepreneurs become more successful and sustainable.
Through business and technical training, market intelligence, and networking opportunities created by and for the community, SembraMedia's diverse team has worked with hundreds of enterprising journalists and has inspired the creation of dozens of new media outlets? and connections within the emerging journalism community in the region.
From its establishment in 2015 to date, we have mapped the digital media ecosystem in Latin America, Spain and the U.S. Hispanic market, and we have also built a regional network that represents more than 875 digital publications. Our media directory, case studies and research activities, such as Inflection Point, have been cited in more than 150 articles and blog posts, which has set SembraMedia as a reference of independent, digital journalism in Spanish.
Luminate is a global philanthropic organization that has been part of The Omidyar Group since 2018. It aims to empower people and institutions to work together to build just and fair societies.
The organization supports and funds for-profit and non-profit projects working on four interconnected areas: Civic Empowerment, Data & Digital Rights, Financial Transparency and Independent Media. It has supported 236 organizations in 18 countries with over US$314 million in funding.
Luminate's portfolio draws on over a decade of work as the Governance & Citizen Engagement initiative at Omidyar Network, an organization established by Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay.
